The Leicester School of Craftsmanship, a predecessor to De Montfort University, was founded in 1870. Eventually, it was referred to as Leicester Polytechnic and Leicester Colleges of Art and Technology. In 1992, Leicester Polytechnic became De Montfort University. With its humble origins as a derelict warehouse, the institution has expanded and transformed to accommodate about 27,000 students and 2,600 staff members.
